What are ATA Codes?

ATA chapters (Air Transport Association) provide a standardized numbering system for aircraft systems and components. Originally defined by ATA Spec 100, they are now managed under ATA iSpec 2200. Every aircraft maintenance manual, service bulletin, and engineering order references these chapters.

How to Use ATA Codes

ATA codes appear on work orders, MEL items, deferred maintenance logs, and technical publications. A full reference looks like ATA 32-10-00 where 32 = chapter (Landing Gear), 10 = section (Main Gear), and 00 = subject (General). This site covers chapter-level references.

Common ATA Chapters

The most frequently referenced chapters in line maintenance are: ATA 24 (Electrical), ATA 27 (Flight Controls), ATA 28 (Fuel), ATA 29 (Hydraulics), ATA 32 (Landing Gear), ATA 34 (Navigation), ATA 71–80 (Powerplant systems).
